EXTRA-CURRICULAR

ALUMNI GIVEBACK

Students will graduate ready to take on the world.

But will lack of financial knowledge stop them?

Higher education can be exhausting: so much to cover, dwindling funding, and trying to keep your curriculum relevant and students engaged. We get it—you only have so much time in your day and you don’t always have the tools you want.

But you care so deeply about your students. You want them to be ready for life after college.

Let’s get them set and savvy with money.

Most Christians want to manage money well but they've never learned how. Open Hands Finance is a small group course that teaches young adults basic money management and how to thrive on any income.

  • Six weeks

  • Student led

  • Small group format

  • Relevant, timely information for college-age students

  • Encourages alumni participation

Before, I was an irresponsible college student with no knowledge about my financial future. After going through an Open Hands workbook this semester, I am much more informed and prepared to make financial decisions and investments. This is the real deal!
— Lauren

Through a series of small groups, podcasts, and an interactive workbook, students will learn essential financial skills for their upcoming foray into adulthood, all from a Christian perspective of generosity and wise stewardship. By the end of the class, students will:

  • Make a budget

  • Set up automatic savings

  • Make a plan for debt

  • Be confident in investing for retirement

This program is meant to be plugged in and run through student life, alumni relations, or a student business group, putting no additional strain on your core requirements or endless scheduling headaches.

It was good to talk about debt and how to deal with it responsibly. It’s real now.
— Madison, Public Health Major

Taylor University Case Study

Over 200 juniors and seniors from Taylor University have gone through the course so far.

Students said they learned the following principles from Open Hands:

  • Budgeting day-to-day expenses

  • Planning to pay off student debt quickly

  • Starting investments at a young age

  • Always tithing something even if it is small

  • Creating good budget habits now for success long-term

  • Saving and designating money for an emergency fund.

76% of students said they would consider giving back to the university.

When asked if students would consider giving back $20 a year to Taylor for the next five years to "pay it forward" from the investment alumni gave to them to open the Roth IRA, 76% said yes.

Would you consider giving back?

Felt comfortable dealing with a sometimes uncomfortable topic. The authors are so easy going which also makes the program fun to go through. A must buy for those hoping to take control of their finances.

Get your students on board with a biblical view of finance and generosity.

FAQS

Q: What does this program cost per student?

A: Content for this course is $29 per student, with workbooks available on this site or Amazon. Additional expenses (for example, a Roth IRA match - are up to the discretion of each organization).

Q: Are there 6 or 7 sessions?

A: Technically there are 6 sessions plus a bonus 7th session included in every workbook. The bonus section is how to handle money as a couple. This may or may not apply to participants, which is why we’ve included it as an optional bonus session.

Q: How is it run on campus?

A: The program is run for students, by students. We recommend you select a Student Coordinator to oversee logistics of groups and promote within the student body. This is an opportunity for graduate students or finance/business students to have relevant training and practice in organizing and facilitating groups.

Open Hands can be run through a variety of departments - residence life, the business school, a calling and career office, spiritual life, or student development. We’ve also seen it as an opportunity for advancement/alumni relations to partner with these other departments on campus as this program boosts young alumni involvement for those that go through the program.
